Jewel Filigree Compact E & J Bass NY Antique Jeweled Powder Mirror Compact
This is a beautiful antique jeweled filigree E & J Bass of New York compact that is in very good condition. It measures 2 inches in diameter and is not missing any of the pretty bezel set stones. The compact opens to an empty powder compartment and a reflective glass mirror that has some light haze as well as a crack in it. The mirror could be replaced, as the mirror frame can easily be removed. The bottom is hallmarked with the E&JB, NY stamp. A unique and gorgeous piece to add to any antique collection. It comes in a white organza gift pouch perfect for that special lady.
More on the company of manufacture: E & J Bass, Inc of NY, sold items in the 1890's to 1930 under the name Empire Art Gold, Imperial Art Silver and Empire Art Silver, their mark usually consisted of a Crown in a circle with E&JB Empire Art. Their business collapsed during the Depression. They also manufactured enamel and jewel combinations. I also saw some pieces of jewelry, such as sash buckles which were stamped Empire Art. The Dorothy Rainwater book indicates that E & J Bass were "Manufacturers of sterling silver wares, sterling deposit wares and plated silver and jewelry." You will normally find markings on the bases of the boxes.
